I’ve been providing counseling services for over 30 years to a diverse group of individuals of all ages, as well as working with groups, couples, and families.
Through my graduate programs and study, and later, as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Dayton and at United Theological Seminary, I indulged my passion for understanding human emotions and behavior. I became a licensed counselor applying psychotherapy, or talk therapy, and interpersonal therapy counseling services, but still teach and supervise. I constantly seek to broaden and deepen my knowledge related to helping others. My best learning has come from my own life experience, the privilege of practicing therapy, and getting to hear other’s stories.
For example, working with children helps me understand ways that adult issues are formed; working with adults helps me suspect where a child’s behavior is leading. I have learned much about parenting from my own children — though no lesson of parenting is learned soon enough.
My journey as a professional writer, musician, marathon runner, woodworker, and travels to Europe contribute to my work. Those interests have taught me to balance effort with rest, coping with pain and injury, food issues, sustaining motivation, and nurturing curiosity. My years as a writer, preacher, and public speaker have sharpened my sensitivity to language and deepened my respect for the personal connection as a counselor providing therapy.

I offer individual counseling and group counseling, as well as counseling services for families and couples. As a couples and family counselor, I enjoy the people I work with and the collaborative process of helping them create the lives they want to have in talk therapy. Some people come to see me for counseling services on family or work problems, some for help in dealing with a chronic health issue or a loss, and some to change longstanding emotional and interpersonal patterns involving anxiety, anger, or intimacy. As an experienced counselor utilizing psychotherapy, or talk therapy, I usually try quick and simple approaches first, because sometimes they work, but if not, we can go deeper into your unique personal narrative.
As a professional writer, I enjoy the process of sharing the experiences of living and being a therapist, but in the therapy hour, I want to listen much more than I speak, making room for you to unfold your story through the talk therapy, with me facilitating as needed, rather than simply giving advice.
