Psychotherapy, often referred to as talk therapy, is a method used to help people overcome mental health difficulties or other emotional challenges. During talk therapy, a licensed professional counselor helps guide a person to better understand themselves and learn to live a more satisfying life. Dr. Ingram utilizes psychotherapy in individual, family, couples and group counseling to find core issues and address them in a therapeutic manner.

At one point or another, most people have faced overwhelming challenges that seem too difficult to manage alone. If you're feeling like you're struggling with too much on your plate or dealing with issues that are causing you a great deal of distress, it might be time to consider getting help from a licensed counselor. How can you determine the appropriate moment to contact someone? And once you do, what should you do then?
In this article, we'll provide you with some signs that it's time to get help, the reasons you might be feeling overwhelmed or stressed, strategies for communicating your needs, tips for choosing the right counselor, and ways to maximize your therapy sessions.
Feeling hopeless or helpless, withdrawing from others, mood swings or irritability, increased use of substances, trouble sleeping or eating, and experiencing physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches, are all things to look out for. If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to seek help. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms or if you're feeling like you're stuck in a rut and can't seem to move forward, you don't have to suffer alone.
There are many reasons why you might be feeling overwhelmed or stressed. It could be due to work-related stress, relationship issues, health problems, financial worries, or past experiences that have left you feeling anxious, depressed, or traumatized. Regardless of the cause, it's important to recognize when you're feeling overwhelmed and to take steps to manage the stress before it becomes too much to handle.
Effective communication with your therapist is crucial to getting the help you need. One of the best strategies is to be honest and open about how you're feeling. When you're honest with your therapist, it helps them provide you with the support you need. Additionally, if you're not comfortable with your therapist or the therapy method being used, express your concerns in a respectful way.
Finding the right therapist is a major factor in the success of your therapy. Start by making a list of your requirements for the ideal therapist such as their specialization, gender, credentials, location, and schedule. Then research online, ask for recommendations from family and friends, and even call potential candidates to ask for information about their experience, approach, and fees.
Once you have a list of possible therapists, it's important to ask the right questions when researching their therapy services. It’s essential to understand their fees, insurance coverage, availability, and their areas of specialization. And if you feel overwhelmed or uncertain, consider asking for a brief consultation to learn more about their approach, and to see if their style and personality meshes with yours.
It’s essential to mentally prepare for your therapy session by setting an intention, being honest and open, and staying present in the moment. Also, be open to receiving feedback and willing to try new techniques suggested by your therapist. And finally, don't forget that the benefits of therapy take time to manifest, so be patient and consistent in your approach.
