Psychotherapy, often referred to as talk therapy, is a method used to help people overcome mental health difficulties or other emotional challenges. Dr. Ingram utilizes psychotherapy in individual, family, couples and group counseling to find core issues and address them in a therapeutic manner.

In the modern world, mental health is a significant problem. Millions of people struggle to cope with various emotional and mental challenges that can affect their personal and professional lives. When dealing with such issues, getting professional help can work wonders. However, choosing between counseling and therapy can be tricky. Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, they’re not the same. In this article, we will help you understand the differences between counseling and therapy, the benefits of each, and when you should seek help from a licensed counselor or therapist.
Counseling, also known as talk therapy, is a short-term solution-focused approach that focuses on specific issues that are causing distress, such as relationship challenges, grief, anxiety, and depression. It is provided by licensed counselors who can offer guidance and support to individuals, or groups to cope with the issue at hand. On the other hand, therapy usually involves a longer-term process that aims to explore deeper-rooted issues that may have greatly impacted an individual's life. Therapy also focuses on a wide range of issues like psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems.
While both counseling and therapy share some similarities in terms of methodology and approach, one of the significant differences between the two lies in their benefits. Counseling is an ideal choice for individuals experiencing specific challenges that affect their daily lives and require immediate intervention. Counseling is designed to offer a short-term solution to address the specific issue at hand. In contrast, therapy focuses on exploring deeper-rooted issues that may have been prevalent for a more extended period. Therapy can help individuals with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other disorders that may require long-term care and more in-depth exploration of personal issues.
Determining the type of help you need is essential before seeking counseling or therapy. Counseling is a suitable option for dealing with specific life challenges that can arise from events such as divorce, career change, and grief. If more complex issues such as personality disorders or severe mental illnesses exist, therapy may be necessary to get to the root of the issue. It is crucial to talk to a healthcare provider to determine the kind of help that is most appropriate for your situation.
When an individual seeks professional counseling or therapy, they improve their mental health by engaging in conversations that explore their thoughts and emotions. Talk therapy has been known to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, boost self-esteem, help build healthy relationships, and improve coping strategies. Additionally, it can aid in reducing stress, setting goals, and helping individuals gain a better understanding of themselves.
Our mental health is a major factor affecting our overall well being. If you are facing challenges that impact your daily life, seeking help from a licensed counselor or therapist can provide the support you need. If you experience uncontrolled or unhealthy emotions, have difficulty managing daily stress, experience changes in mood, or are having issues with relationships, it might be time to seek professional help.
Finding the right therapist or counselor can be overwhelming, but it’s worth starting and committing to the process. Start by seeking recommendations from friends and family. You can also consider online directories, check with your insurance provider, or search for professionals online. When choosing the right professional, consider your budget as well as their location, expertise, and approach to treatment.
If you are struggling with issues that impact your daily life and require immediate intervention, counseling is worth considering. However, if you are dealing with complex issues, or a long-standing history of mental illness, therapy may provide more effective long-term support. Remember, taking the first step towards improving your mental health is always the most challenging, but it can be the most transformative step you take in your life.
